The Basics of Astrobiology: Recorded Lectures
The Basics of Astrobiology: Recorded Lectures In December 2016, as part of the Search for Life: From Early Earth to Exoplanets meeting in Vietnam, a two-day training school in the basics of astrobiology was held. This covers topics from astrophysics, geosciences and life sciences. Recordings of the lectures are available below: Astrophysics and Astrochemistry Nikos Prantzos – Nucleosynthesis and Galactic Chemical Evolution Masatoshi Ohishi – Astrochemistry Planetology and Geosciences Alain Lecavellier – Exoplanets Hervé Martin – Early Earth Geosphere Geosciences and...

The 3rd STFC-UK Space Agency Postgraduate Summer School in Astrobiology took place at the University of Leeds between 11-16th September 2011. Building upon previous, highly successful events at the Open University and University of Kent, the week began with a social mixer on the Sunday evening where our 25 student attendees, from all over the UK, were introduced to the joys of astrobiology by Dr Lewis Dartnell (UCL), as only he can with a marvellously engaging after-dinner talk. The venue for the week-long science meeting was the superbly refurbished School of Earth & Environment with...

The fourth Astrobiology Society of Britain conference, ASB4, was hosted this year at Royal Holloway, University of London, over 7–9 April 2010. The conference was a huge success, attracting well over 50 delegates, both nationally and internationally, and demonstrated the incredibly broad range and diversity of current astrobiology research. The meeting also attracted a number of journalists and TV documentary producers and so will hopefully make an appreciable impact in presenting astrobiology within the public eye. The papers proceeding from this meeting have now been published in a special...

UK Centre for Astrobiology, University of Edinburgh, 15–17 April 2013 Report by Dr Terence P Kee The Astrobiology Society of Britain was enormously pleased to hold its fifth biannual conference (ASB5) at the University of Edinburgh between April 15–17 2013, coinciding with the grand opening of the newly founded UK Centre for Astrobiology at the same institution. Thus, it was hoped that the flag-ship astrobiology conference in the UK would be an ideal opportunity to forge close relationships between ASB and the UKCA. The South Hall conference venue was a perfect location for our meeting,...

Royal Astronomical Society, Burlington House, London – 9th December 2011 Conference report by Dr Dave Waltham & Dr Lewis Dartnell If very special preconditions are necessary for the eventual evolution of observers on a planet then the Earth must be an oddball. If true, this “anthropic selection” concept is as important for a clear understanding of our planet’s properties as the concept of plate tectonics! But is it true? On December 9, 2011 more than ninety geologists, biologists and astronomers gathered at an RAS discussion on “Is the Earth special?” to debate this issue at a meeting...
