Hands on Space Biohack Event – Birmingham – May 13th/14th

The Birmingham Open Media (BOM) centre is hosting the first Space Biohack, bringing together scientists, artists and enthusiasts with members of the High Altitude Bioprospecting team and astrobiologists from NASA. This event will creatively explore how research with astrobiology is contributing to novel biotechnologies and addressing gender preconceptions in the history of space exploration. This will be a serious effort to build a working astrobiology payload and we are trying to attract as many specialist attendees as possible – this means ASB – as well as a wider mix of...

European Astrobiology Roadmap

The AstRoMap project has produced the first European roadmap for astrobiology research. It identifies five research topics: The origin and evolution of planetary systems; The origins of organic compounds in space; Rock-water-carbon interactions, organic synthesis on Earth, and the steps to life; Life and Habitability; Biosignatures facilitating the detection of life. The report outlines the key scientific objectives and methods for investigating these topics. One of the key recommendations of the project is the creation of a European platform or institute (possibly modelled on EANA) that...

The 3rd STFC-UK Space Agency Postgraduate Summer School in Astrobiology took place at the University of Leeds between 11-16th September 2011. Building upon previous, highly successful events at the Open University and University of Kent, the week began with a social mixer on the Sunday evening where our 25 student attendees, from all over the UK, were introduced to the joys of astrobiology by Dr Lewis Dartnell (UCL), as only he can with a marvellously engaging after-dinner talk. The venue for the week-long science meeting was the superbly refurbished School of Earth & Environment with...

Conference Report ASB4

The fourth Astrobiology Society of Britain conference, ASB4, was hosted this year at Royal Holloway, University of London, over 7–9 April 2010. The conference was a huge success, attracting well over 50 delegates, both nationally and internationally, and demonstrated the incredibly broad range and diversity of current astrobiology research. The meeting also attracted a number of journalists and TV documentary producers and so will hopefully make an appreciable impact in presenting astrobiology within the public eye. The papers proceeding from this meeting have now been published in a special...
