Call for Ideas: The Deep Space Gateway

The Deep Space Gateway will be humanity’s first spaceship. A human tended spacecraft in lunar vicinity that can move between orbits and where we can tackle the major challenges of human exploration in deep space.

Preparations for the Deep Space Gateway are in being led by the International Space Station partner agencies.

ESA invites the scientific community to contribute to the definition of this exploration driven platform by identifying the scientific opportunities that the Deep Space Gateway could offer and how these opportunities might be realised.

A Call For Ideas is now open, which will feed into a workshop at ESA ESTEC on 5-6 December 2017.

The workshop will review submissions in the areas of life sciences, physical sciences, astronomy, Earth and Solar System sciences and technology. It will also consider education and public engagement initiatives.

ESA will use the outcomes of this process to:

  • Inform discussions with international partners and stakeholders.
  • Establish technical requirements for design and development.
  • Guide future announcements of opportunity and research calls.

More information on the Deep Space Gateway as well as details on how to submit ideas and register for the workshop are available at this link: http://exploration.esa.int/moon/59377-workshop/

Some important dates are:

  • Workshop registration opens 1 September
  • Deadline for receipt of submissions to the Call 29 September
